'Mutual Generation, Mutual Restraint, Mutual Compatibility, Mutual Conflict 相生 相克 相合 相冲’ explores the unconscious introduction of digital experiences into the physical world. It navigates the reconstruction of individuals’ virtual counterparts within platforms that often marginalize physical identity. This project is an introspective examination of self-identity, contemplating the complexities of a multicultural background within a Western social context. The aim is to comprehend the structure, dynamics, and interaction of self-identity with physical reality.
Exploring the principles of 'Mutual Generation, Mutual Restraint, Mutual Compatibility, Mutual Conflict' rooted in Taoism, the artist uncovers their profound influence in establishing balance in nature and societal contexts. Drawing inspiration from N. Katherine Hayles' 'How We Became Posthuman,' the project aligns with her exploration of embodiment and disembodied information, illustrating how individuals, akin to information processors, shape the flow of information through their expressions. This combined perspective highlights the impact of Taoist principles on natural harmony and resonates with Hayles' study on information's role in shaping individual identity.
Practically, the project embarks with field recording experiments conducted in Rotterdam, the Netherlands (the current place of residence), and Chengdu, China (the hometown). Simultaneously, 3D scans or precise location marking where sound data is collected are performed. Emphasis is placed on areas where urbanization has reshaped the functions of buildings, neighborhoods, and multicultural communities. Additionally, digital data illustrating residents' mobility patterns and archives of community and cultural shifts in a post-modern context are collected. These datasets will be transformed into narrative-based data algorithms, merging field recordings and 3D scans.
Furthermore, exploration with second-hand or abandoned electrical components to convey sound and context based on the data algorithm's materialism is a focal point. Collaborating with a sound group comprising Matteo Mazzu (synth and bass), Aurel Violas (drums), and Michael Murray (sax and Max MSP), the artist plans audio-visual improvisations at the collection sites, primarily within neighborhoods and communities. Subsequently, these performances will be evolved into visual installations based on audio-visual content."
